This initiative, now in its third operating year, continues to gather strength and, as at 31st March 2009, there were 22 members one of whom had made a double contribution for the full term of his 5 year membership. A subscription of £12,500 was also very generously made to the initiative during 2008 by The North British Hotel Trust which will fund 10 individual Classic Courses during the year commencing 1st April 2009. The interest of Allied Irish Bank (UK) in soba continues and, in addition to being a member of The President’s Company, the Bank, for the third consecutive year, sponsored the Annual President’s Dinner. ![]() ![]() The Third Annual President’s Dinner was held in Glasgow’s Western Club on 12th November and was attended by 38 members, guests and soba trustees. Also present were four bursary recipients and two of them described their “Classic” experiences and what they had taken away with them from Loch Eil. The principal guest speaker was the charismatic Scottish entrepreneur Sir Tom Farmer who, from very humble beginnings as a van driver in Edinburgh, ultimately made such an enormous impact on the Scottish and then the UK and European business scenes. The President’s Company hosted a golf outing for members and guests at Western Gailes Golf Club in June and this was attended by 16 hopefuls competing for the honour of being the first winner of the President’s Cup. Good golfing weather was in plentiful supply and it was resolved that this would become an annual event. Strenuous efforts will continue to be made to extend membership numbers to plug the gaps that will emerge as membership terms begin to expire in 2011. Having been with The Outward Bound Trust for 24 years, one of my abiding memories is being on a hill in the Lake District, with a disillusioned scaffolder on a classic course in appalling weather. He was ready to finish his course there and then. He had already thrown down his rucksack. With persuasion he stuck out the course and finished as the leader during the final expedition.
